2019 Achievements to Unlock (part I)

You know there are things I’ve learned from video games that apply to every day life. From teamwork in games like Overwatch and Destiny, to the importance of checking on friends in Animal Crossing and the importance of dialogue via...well any game with a minimum of a story line lol.

One of the things most gamers have in common from board to video is that we are achievement/trophy hunters. Maybe we’re not all completionists. But, when you review little mysteries or read about something you want like a little spray or armor or special plant or tool that you NEED, well; you try and go for it don’t you?

For example, I want all the pixel and chibi sprays on overwatch. While I’m not sure I’ll ever GET all of them, I can still try! I’ve surprised myself with some. For instance I got both for my boo Sombra, and the more unexpected pixel for Roadhog! In Animal Crossing ya girl wants ALL the Golden tools...and fishing and bugs have proven difficult, but it’s—STILL FUN TO TRY!

Right now, I’m trying to make sure I have fun trying in real life as well! In the Nike Run Club I want as many achievements as possible!!! So while im doing the Bodyshred workout by Jillian Michaels im changing up the cardio days with a focus on running.

10.21 is a start but I want MORE!

10.21 is a start but I want MORE!

Also Nike hosts contests which the only way to win is to run—including on a treadmill! And while I am an adidas girl through and through, but I love how Nike has always been at the forefront for social justice. Also their apps are AD-FREE! And, you don’t have to upgrade for anything!

What are some achievements you’re trying to unlock right now?

P.S. I’m still HELLA salty about Cayde-6 and I miss my Robot (Exo) boyfriend 😜

Resolution and Forgiveness

It’s been a while since I’ve written. Which stinks because I love to.

Rather than go over anything, my resolution for 2019 is also my word for the year (or something to that effect) which Is forgiveness—of myself. I started this “resolution” before the new year, in November. I’m working out. Yes! I do want to lose weight. But I also needed to face the fact that I go to such an unhealthy point, and forgive myself for it. I’ve been working out 7 weeks straight, and i love it. I also need to forgive myself of stress…but I’m letting myself take it one step at a time, you know? Maybe if I forgive myself I won’t feel so anxious? But I think 2019 will be ok. I’m stressing…but not as bad as I could be lol.

Anyway to recap: 2018 had the roughest start for me. The year wasn’t bad though! Just, a rough start! But some of the highlights made it a really great year!

We bought our first home!

IMG_1775.JPG

We got to take the-bestest-boi, #ThorinThePup on a semi-cross-country road trip! We even got to visit one of my favorite places in the world: Yellowstone National Park! And The Tenor got to go to SDCC!!

Thorin is the best boi!

Thorin is the best boi!

My crummy photo of Old Faithful (so crowded)!

My crummy photo of Old Faithful (so crowded)!

I changed my hair a bunch of time! And we got a new kitten Marshal Lee Mallow (yes, those are references to Animal Crossing, Adventure Time and Veronica Mars):

So itty bitty! Days forever gone!

So itty bitty! Days forever gone!

And, we celebrated the end of the year with some of our favorite people! While a lot of friends have moved, and (sadly) more will move again this year, it’s been a good one, and I’m sure 2019 will be just as great with even more hair dye LOL!

My Blog as a Mix Tape vol 2

I chose 7 tracks for Side A, and another seven for Side B. Side A is about getting to a realization point, and Side B is about embracing my weird!

While my original "

My Blog as a Mix Tape

" post wasn't an ode to GotG, I kept meaning to revisit it. But it never

felt

right. Now it's 2017, and a lot of stuff happened last year (admittedly, most of it was not good). And whether or not this earth is going to hell in a hand basket, I'm determined to make the best of it (hell, so far so good).  And with Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 out next week it seemed like as good a time as any and a salute to one of the best nerdy movies to date with a bangin' soundtrack, by bringing back the post I'm most proud of in its own sequel!

If you'd like to join me again in a sweet melodic link up, send me your list, either here in the comments, or on twitter, or any social media!

D&D: For N00bs by a N00b! Part one: Finding Your Guild & My Campaigns

Lately, my geekiest endeavor has been in playing Dungeons and Dragons with The Tenor and some of his coworkers.

via

D&D is one of those games that has been around for decades, that I was always interested in, but growing up wasn't allowed to play for...er, reasons (thanks a lot Dobson...). But in 2009 when I first met my adopted big bros the VERY first night I met them, Jay had a game going. I didn't hear a lot of the narrative but the flint and metal in my brain struck. It took a while, and about three different games (one of those being an attempt at 3.5v) before this fourth campaign to kick off.

Our first game didn't even get to a campaign. Mind you, this was a 3.5 game and we spent SO MUCH time creating our characters. Which is not a bad thing. But if you're like me when it comes to avatars like even in Rock Band, you know you want to get your details out and on paper. This group was made up of some friends I went to church with back in CA (not all churchgoers are sour lemons). It was fun and we'd have beer and coffee while working on our stories together.

My 3.5v and 5.0v Player's Handbooks

via me

But then we moved, and my next group was through one of my managers. He did the voices of the NPCs and had LotR scores playing as EPIC AF background music. Our first mission was based on the 5.0 kick off story which in my second game we later repeated. What was interesting about those two games was how different they were approached by the Dungeon Master (DM-person telling the story to those participating; aka The Game's God as what they say: goes!) and those of us who played. The Tenor and I had a different ways of handling the situation per game. Its also a behavioral scientists dream to watch and play this game I think as so many people will approach the same situation a different way! While one is the "preferred method" there isn't a right or wrong way...kind of like in life on many of it's situations.

Last/lately is our current campaign which had a slightly rocky start as all our characters were somewhat lone wolf archetypes in various forms. I'm going to go ahead and say: DON'T MAKE A LONE WOLF! Don't be that person. If your character is scared of people because they've been hurt (like my character) it can work as long as your stay mission oriented. Lone Wolfs/Lone Wolves (I think the former is technically most correct) are boring and make the missions hard to accomplish. But since then, we've fixed it. Each of us are Loners, brought together by "the cause" (see the mission). As I said this group was brought together via my husbands coworkers...though I'm hoping to get another lady in the game!

Finding your group can be easy. Some great places to start:

  • work

  • church

  • Starbucks flyers (post them, or you might some!)

  • roll20.net (where you can set up an online game with your blogging buddies)

  • Geek Girl Brunch

  • friends from game stores

  • anywhere honestly! Just get a group going.

As for places to play most/many comic and hobby shops have tables and rooms that you can check out to set up a game. Additionally reserving a room at a library or coffee shop works as well (as long as you mind your P's and Q's for those around you). Just be sure that if you're not playing in a home to be a good customer too.

via

Have you been looking to play Dungeons and Dragons? Have you played before? What was your favorite campaign like? If you haven't played, are you interested, and what help do you need in getting started?

Asgardians of the Galaxy (aka Thor Ragnarok) Trailer

Holy crap! Long time no post! But we moved again, and with he holidays (and holiday shopping season) over I'm choosing to be back!

Which brings me to the amazing trailer for

Thor Ragnarok

(or as I'm actively going to call it thanks to my friend Ryan: "Asgardians of the Galaxy")

I've not been excited for a Thor movie in a long time. I did enjoy the first one enough, but let's be honest, they've been pretty weak. This one looks like it will be more fun, and actually be a bit more about Thor than his (insanely handsome) brother Loki.

ALSO: I am here for Valkyrie and Hela! Hel is one of my favorite Norse mythology characters (mostly because I was introduced to her in K.A. Applegate's post

Animorphs

series

Everworld

). And Valkyrie is SERIOUS cosplay goals right now! I love her armor and the shot of her dragging Thor around with the smirk?

GURRRRL! I'm here for it!

And the Hulk bit? Frakking PRICELESS!!! "He's a friend from work!" is a great line!!!

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Are you stoked for it?

Day 3 Your Anime Crush (30 Days of Anime)

30 Days of Anime with Joie Fatale

While Howl of

Howl's Moving Castle

is on the "list" (if this is ever a fandom friday post I have this at the ready) as well as Spike Spiegel of

Cowboy Bebop

.

I gotta say Vash the Stampede is my anime crush.

via

For a character who is known in his universe for being a walking disaster, he's got a heart of gold, and a good sense of humor! Also the dude's a dork hahaha! Also Johnny Yong Bosch does his voice!!! <3 p="">

This dork, hamming it up.

via

Also, the dude kicks all sorts of ass! I also recommend this anime as the story is more than meets the eyes!

Day 2 Favorite Anime...So Far (30 Days of Anime)

30 Days of Anime with Joie Fatale

This is easily the toughest question...and I have two answers because:

I DO WHAT I WANT!

Answer number one is of course: Sailor Moon.

The magical girl of all magical girls. While not the first magical girl in existence from anime or manga, it was the one where many of us learned of this type of anime. For western audiences this anime was one of the first girl-oriented anime's available in the US (well, that I recall).

I'm not going to go over the premise but, one the things I loved about the show was the outfits. They were so cute! You can judge me, but my dream cosplay is STILL to be a Sailor Scout! Also, since there are 10 different scouts, there's nearly a character for anyone to relate to! The 90's animation is not as polished and shiny as the new Crystal season, but, back then it was golden...and adorable af!

The second show is Cowboy Bebop

In addition to being one of my all time favorite anime, its also one of the best shows ever! Not only is the animation beautiful, but it boasts one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) soundtracks in Television history. Yoko Kanno the composer helped carry the series into the phenomena it became. From jazz, to blues, to rock to country and of course: bebop! She covered the whole gambit! Additionally she's composed other beautiful piece for anime's like Escaflowne!

From ep. 1. (

via

From ep. 20 (

via

)

From Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (

via

)

Also: the animation is top notch! The fight scenes are some of my favorite (along side that hallway fight from Daredevil). And while each episode is practically a self contained story, it all flows into the finale of the series. The downside of this show? it's one season. But not like a "Firefly-one-season-that-NEEDED-more" it actually was supposed to end. In fact, one of the best parts of this is that you can recycle from episode 26 and go back to episode 1, and see more in the series.

Those are my favorite anime's so far.

Day 1 Very First Anime (30 Days of Anime)

You know what: I've missed writing...a LOT! These last few months have been trying...on us all if I'm not mistaken. But, to alleviate some of the gravity of the year so far, I'm doing the 30 day anime challenge this month.

30 Days of Anime with Joie Fatale

My first introduction to anime was when my family was stationed in the Philippines. While I'm 90% sure it was voltron...I just don't remember. So I'll go with the first one I truly recall: Unico.

via

Unico is an adorable little cinnamon-bun eared unicorn, and being the magical-girl-in-training-child I was in love with Unico. He was created by the great Osamu Tezuka who also created Astro-Boy, Phoenix, and Kimba the White Lion (ALSO! He's a descendent of Hatori Hanzo the ninja and samurai)!

I don't remember much about Unico to be honest. I remember it was one of the movies, and, that we used to rent it on VHS tape. But, I believe it was The Fantastic Adventures of Unico based on the covers of the two movies (which I am going to now purchase on

Blu-Ray

 **SQUEE**).

While I don't remember anything plot-wise I remember being in love with the aesthetic style (I remember telling my parents that it reminded me of my favorite cartoons when we were stationed abroad) and well...I mean LOOK AT UNICO!

Cute af! (

via

)

I mean, that cuteness!

Magical af! (

)

Any who, stay tuned for more anime love! Tomorrow: Favorite Anime I've Watched so Far (god! How do I pick?!?!

is so cool! It's available through

Chicky Bands

Where I've Been

It's been about four months since I've been on here. Which is not good, as I'm actually really proud of my little space here on the internet.

I've been dealing with a lot of stuff...moving, and mental mostly.

February and March were a bit jarring not just because we knew we would be moving, but, in that where we would move, we just didn't know.

Back in April my friend Gwen asked me if I would be comfy answering a few questions about my depression on her new site

Geek Aid Box

. I was equal parts enthusiastic, and terrified. I've mostly tried to stray away from bringing that part of me here...which I don't think I should've been scared to do...but I was. You can read what I said

here

, and be sure to bookmark her site. It's AMAZING, and therapeutic, and helpful! And did I mention: AMAZING!!!

These last few months I've been trying to sift through some muck and mire.

I've found a regular exercise routine, with some friends. I'm seeing a therapist. and I'm trying to make sure I FaceTime friends and family more regularly.

At the end of April, I had a few REALLY low points. It took a lot to stop from doing something irreversible, and harmful. I've sort of DIVED into video games a little too hardcore I think. I'm trying to find my balance of "for fun" and "for escape." I set a timer, and two days a week now.

I'm gearing up for the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! Which is SDCC! And I'm so excited to go home and see my family and friends..and food (only God can judge me).

I feel like this is my most poorly written post ever...but I feel like I need to get this out and off my chest.

Here's a picture of Kirby because he's adorable AF and makes me happy!

should've

Anyway, Rey is a fierce fighter, and becomes even more fierce as a Jedi bad-ass! That's why this outfit is based around outdoor terrain running...but also so you can use a bo staff like Rey

would!!

Oh, Oscar Isaac...why you be so dreamy. But seriously, Poe was such an awesome character in The Force Awakens (TFA), and I'm super stoked he was not killed off! Can't wait to see more of his and Finn's Bromance (/romance?).

As for the playlist...

Did you know: Oscar Isaac played in some florida ska bands in his youth? My Rude-Joie heart is fluttering! In fact,

this

article is 100% to blame for this week's workout playlist, dubbed "

Bonus points: for cardio,

Happiest Moments of Life So Far... (52 Lists-Week 3)

Happiest Moments in my Life So Far...

Man, these lists get a little deep, don't they? I know off the bat a few (OK, I know two..two). But let's see where my mind rambled?

  • Getting Engaged- This is probably on most people's list, but I never dated anyone prior to my husband. A lot of that is due to sheer shyness, but, the other is I was either not interested in anyone, or, they weren't interested in me back. I did know right away I wanted to be with The Tenor the moment I met him though (not trying to be cheesy, it's just the way it was). At the time however, I was working on me so, I put those thoughts aside. But when we got engaged, I was so happy I couldn't speak. I didn't think I could've been so full of emotions, but I went silent and was a blubbering love fool!

  • Getting on Stage with Green Day/First Kiss- in 2009 I was still very Josie Geller (Never Been Kissed) and I wanted to make sure that I got one from #ForeverCrush Billie Joe Armstrong! The Tenor (who was then, "Just a Friend") and our BFF Koala-Bear and I went to see the band, and the goal was to get me on stage. We did, and, I insisted on making sure Billie Joe gave me a peck. Not going to lie, it wasn't "magic" or "fireworks" but for me, it was about making sh*t happen that year. And dammit: I slammed revolving doors!

  • New Life Change- This has been a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, I am missing my family and friends a lot. Like, a lot you guys! On the other, it's been nice to focus on us, relax a bit, learn about keeping house a bit more (something I thought I knew, but realize it's a lot harder than I thought). Also, we have cute fur-babies! It's nice to know we're in a new place in life, that while extremely trying, is also very rewarding not just for us, but for a lot of people. Also, the day I found out, I was so happy to quit my old job. Like, whenever I feel down about missing CA, I just think about how satisfying that was and it puts a smile on my face.

  • The Twins- When my sister gave birth to the twins, I was so happy (and not just because she took some pressure off the Tenor and I lol). They are my mum's first grand babies, and my first niece and nephew I got to be at the birth for! They're so precious, cute, and smart! I love them!

  • Getting Married- Obviously (save the best for last)! I wasn't sure I'd want a traditional wedding growing up, and surprising (most especially to me) I did! I was so excited and happy, and while there was one major mix up at our reception venue, IT DIDN'T MATTER! It was a lot of fun, and seeing all the planning, and such come to fruition was really satisfying. But most importantly, it made me so happy to know I was marrying someone who loved me for me! I stopped believing I'd ever be married at an early age, so it was a complete shock when I got engaged, and TBH I was nervous all they up until the day before the wedding. But that morning came, and I woke up with a smile that lasted all day (heck, thinking about it makes my cheeks ache lol!). Nothing was able to bug me that day.

Anyway, I know that list is random af, but, that's what I've got! LOL!

What are some of your happiest moments?

5 Chances I'm GOING to Take in 2016 (5 Fandom Friday)

This Fandom Friday post is brought to you by the letter

N

 for

The Nerdy Girlie

S

 for

Super Space Chick

, and by readers like

YOU

!

This week's post is based on goals we will not merely be pursuing, but, taking a risk on!

1).

Treat Myself

via

To some clothes that I like, especially more workout wear, and healthy food programs. Also, making sure I take time to relax, and read. It's been weird this last year, not getting to do much of either.

2).

Roller Derby

Roller Derby Storm by

Kevin Bolk

Doing it! I don't care. I need to just go for it! Also, I finally found someone interested in it! So Hopefully we can go together!!!

3).

Masters

via

I want to not only join a Masters swim team...but--more importantly--I want to look seriously for an (affordable? lol) place to work on my Masters degree. I wasn't looking this year, as I knew I'd be moving again. But where we're going next will be for a longer time, and that means: It's time!

4).

Make a Team?

via

I want to get a team sport going (especially if the swim thing doesn't work) for Water Polo, or, Proper Football (aka Soccer), or Quidditch!!! Maybe even relay racing, or dodgeball, or (my personal favorite): Capture the Flag!

5).

Stay Active

via

This year (though off to a

really

bad start) should be an exciting year. One thing I'm working on doing is staying active.  consistently! From exercising hourly, to joining up in sports (seriously though, why is it so hard to find sports teams fro people out of college and high school? I don't get it!).

There's some chance I am going to take! As for my Goals (and Dreams) for 2016, check out

this

post!

Friends I've Converted to Funko-Trash (Funko Fridays)

Funko Fridays hosted by KimiWho.com and dePepi.com

Today's Funko Friday prompt is: "Funko Friends-How many friends have you corrupted?" or, how many friends have you turned into Funko trash lol!

I don't know who i've convinced to become hardcore Funko Pop collectors. But I have noticed some friends are now starting to collect more and more, possibly due to The Tenor's (my husband) and my influence. Some of them we've met this last year a since we've been in military life. But, I know that one couple in particular from CA has started collecting them! I don't know if it's because of us, but my friend

Jason

and

Topher

 (who both write for

Bears Be Gaming

, which you should totally check out!).

I know they have quite a few Pops, but I know one that they really wanted, I was able to help with! At SDCC they were selling Marvel Collector Corps boxes, including, the one with the Hulkbuster! I was out on the floor, and was able to get to the SEPARATE booth (from the rest of the Funko shenanigans) for Collector Corps. I was able to get one of the last two of the Hulkbuster for them! Woot!

via

On the other hand, my dad is the reason I'm into Funko Pops! He bought my first one which was Boo Berry from General Mills' Halloween cereals! It was an SDCC exclusive and it's one of my most treasured POP's!

Are you into Funko? Who, or, what particular Pop got you into them?

Let me know as I

LOVE

to hear people's Pop stories!

Jareth: The Goblin King (Workout Cosplay)

Today's Workout Cosplay is based on David Bowie's iconic role of Jareth the Goblin King from

Labyrinth!

As you may have seen in my

previous post

, I was a late watcher of Labyrinth, but thanks to

my ride-or-die homey

, I got to see it! It was Muppets! It was magical! And, it was Bowie! The movie's brilliant. I based the outfit on his from

this

scene (Magic Dance), with the sparkly blue headband as an homage to the ballroom scene!

This workout playlist is very dance-dance oriented! I wanted it to be something with David's influence, but, also peppy to run or dance or what-have-you to!

David Bowie is no longer with us.

I'm a Black Star by Helen Green

I am not ok. I'm kind of writing this for me, but I'm putting it out there as place to grieve.

I've not been blessed with the ability to see him perform...and now I never will. I cried this morning when I found out. He

just

had his 69th birthday on the 8th. Like, I'm flabbergasted. I kept having to go back and edit tense from present to past...WTF?! Lemmy, Bradbury, and now David Bowie?!?! As a person who loved alt rock (punk/metal with Lemmy, ska with Bradbury, and glam with David), losing three people who are icons in less than three weeks...crap!

I thought it might be ok for me to share some of my favorite slightly-nerdy-but-very-Bowie-related moments:

1).

Under Pressure

via

Because as a music nerd: this song is everything. My husband I sing this song all the time. They're both great vocalists, and were visual artists. Freddie Mercury is my all-time favorite vocalists, and this song was always just perfect!

2).

Nikola Tesla in

The Prestige

via

Remember that time Batman fought against Wolverine with magic? And Alfred was helping Wolverine, and Black Widow was there too?!?! Well, so was Jareth...only as Nikola-f**king-Tesla!!! I like this movie a LOT! And the random surprise of David Bowie being in it always makes me grin!

3).

That Time Got He to Act With the Muppets

via

Obviously, Labyrinth is on this list. It wasn't a part of my childhood because I just didn't see it. I saw it in college because my best friend showed it to me. And like most ladies, Jareth crush for all time. The hair. The eyeshadow. The Goblin King's goblin (because I'm not going to be a liar). LOL! This is pretty much what I plan on watching today too. Soooo...

4).

Zoolander Walk-Off

via

Fashion! Few musicians are as fashionable as Bowie. He married Iman, a model, and they were both happy, and gorgeous and out of this 'effing world!!! That said, I still can't think of a male musician more fashionable than him. So, in Zoolander, who else but David could judge the walk? NO ONE!!!

5).

Forever Cosplaying His Own Characters/Himself

Bowie Over the Years by Helen Green

Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke...the man was a musical genius and a gorram chameleon. Not merely monikers, but, other versions of himself come out to play in musical form! I mean: So many musicians have him to thank, from Madonna to Lady Gaga: he was the King of reinvention!

6).

David Bowie and Vince Noir

via

I'm pretty sure Vince Noir is equal parts Noel Fielding, and his obsession with musicians. Most especially, David Bowie. Both have this wicked androgynous hotness (yes! HOT!) and have great outfits they could only pull off.

7). A

s the Sovereign of The Guild of Calamitous Intent (

Venture Bros.

)

So,

technically

David Bowie did not voice himself in the show. BUT, making him the leader (and a genius villain) of an organization that provides nemesis' to the world's do-gooders was brilliant! This just made so much sense!!! Like, if you want to see this episode it's on Hulu, Season 2, Episodes 12 and 13! It also has Iggy Pop and Klaus Nomi. Their voices are (of course) impersonated. But it was a great moment in the show!

Lord Royal Highness

Spongebob Squarepants knows it's royals, and Lord Royal Highness was voiced by Bowie. Him being in a cartoon is always great...even if the particular episode isn't.

Moulin Rouge

 (&

Star Wars

...kind of)

From the beginning of the movie we can see Bowie's singing on Nature Boy (with Massive Attack). This song has a beautiful and haunting feel. Additionally, the ladies in the Moulin Rouge are also called the Diamond Dogs. Moreover, "Heroes" is beautifully played in the Elephant Love Medley!

Now you may be asking: "yes, yes, but what about Star Wars?" Well, the set upon which Moulin Rouge was shot was torn down to make way for Star Wars Ep. II: Attack of the Clones! So...6 degrees!

The movie is filled with glam rock references! And like the next bullet point, stars Ewan McGregor.

Velvet Goldmine

Velvet Goldmine which is loosely based/fan-fictiony story of Iggy Pop and David Bowie. It also stars Ewan McGregor (as Curt Wilde). It's such a beautiful, 90's-meets-the-70's glam-rock, music video tribute of a movie! The soundtrack is amazing, and the costumes are some of my major cosplay goals! I don't care if no one knows who I'll be!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Moonage Daydream was perfectly placed in the most perfect of soundtracks yet to be created. The second I heard the guitar riff in the theater, I got chills! You can't make a movie in/about space without David Bowie (/Ziggy Stardust). So say we all!

I'm sorry if this was a bit a long, but I wanted to get this out. I'm so sad and devastated by this, and the knowledge that I won't get to see him live. But, I am glad that I get to remember him, and think of him fondly not just when listening to music, but, in other mediums such a movie, TV, and even cartoons.

Thank you Mr. Bowie! Thank you for the music you made, and the things you made us feel that no musician before you had before, and that no other musician will!
