None of This is True (a Spoiler Heavy Book Review)

FINALLY!!! A really great twist!

Spoiler free gist: unreliable narrator (it’s in the title y’all); feminism; complicated relationships platonic and romantic; unlikeable characters. GREAT narrative!

Josie is a bit odd. Somewhere in her adolescence she felt grown…and stopped. She stuck herself there. Possible it’s because of her mother’s neglect. Possibly it’s her husband who is not only 27 years her senior, but who she started a relationship with at 15 years old (him at 42—**BARF!**). She has two daughters and a penchant for denim!

Alex is a Podcaster. She has two children, a daughter and son who happen to attend the same school Josie’s daughters had before they became adults.

Oh, and she and Josie have the same birthdate, same hospital and everything. They meet the night of their 45th birthdays at the same place they both are celebrating at.

I’ll try to keep as spoiler free as possible.

However, I do believe I may hint at the ending, and thus:

***SPOILERS***

S T O P R E A D I N G H E R E

This book is a great peak at not just the insanity anyone can carry, or how important the fables we learn are. Stop here cause yeah I’m going to spoil.

The plot feels like it’s going to obviously end up with Josie doing something along the “big bad things people do” such as “the murder”—and she does.

Orrrr does she? See what I loved most about this was the fact that it seems like she didn’t in the end but that it was in fact her daughter Roxy.

And yet: we know a couple of things about Josie that can leave us as readers in doubt about what the actual truth is. The bow is not neat in this wrap up—heck if we’re going with the gift wrapping idiom I feel as though it’s much more akin to The Office’s Christmas episode with Dirty Santa, where Creed has Jim and he gives him something he had in a plastic bag sitting in his trunk. It’s messy but it is complete.

Honestly: I rarely like open endings. If I were to give it a percentage I’d say 92% of the time I HATE THEM!!!

But Josie has the ability to be such a fully realized unreliable character, who is just this side of Amber Turd crazy you can’t help but wonder if in the last pages if she is in fact guilty, but just delusional enough to believe she didn’t.

Beware wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Beware the ram in wolves clothing.

And also:

Don’t be the one who cried “wolf” when there wasn’t one.

No one will no believe you after a while, and you will always be a guilty “basic bitch.”

5/5 Stars!!!

Adventures in Dreamland and the Work World

For the last Seven YEars I have physically been away from a tormenter. The one who has led to my PTSD. She was still haunting my dreams—well, nightmares if I’m being honest.

However, since I’ve started my new FULL-TIME job, AND (more importantly) been talking to my therapist about it and using tools they have equipped me with, my dreams (now down to once or twice a month) and are no longer nightmares.

The last one had me confronting her ( my tormenter) with my family in tow. I’m still unsure if I should confront her—if I ever see her. There’s a part of me that wants to because maybe she will change. Say her sorry, and maybe even say her apologies to the other people she has hurt.

The part that doesn’t want to, is the part where me (and honestly my therapist) believe with take joy or treasure in the fact that she got to me. Or blame me for “feeling that way.” I’m not sure.

But perhaps, since wisdom comes with our experiences, I can be able to see what it would be.

In the mean time, I am loving my new job. It’s work from home and hopefully soon I will be able to utilize some of the perks.

PTSD: The Shut Downs (Or: I’m a Pokémon?)

One of the biggest issues I’m having is coming to terms with how the PTSD has made depression worse these last few years and may or may not have been a major trigger in my ADHD…IDK, I want to call it? Let’s go with Mega-Evolved ADHD! Like in Pokémon!

This is an actual perfect picture for my brain?!?!

This is an actual perfect picture for my brain?!?!

So like right now and for QUITE AWHILE I have been stuck in this mega evolved form. Carrying all this weight and trauma and dysfunction. UNLIKE Pokémon, in this form I’m not super powered up; rather, I’m the opposite, and underpowered.

It’s as though I have to unlearn harmful TM’s and HM’s (the ways you teach your Pokémon moves that they don’t learn as they evolve), and equip myself with ones I learn with the help of my trainer/therapist, and loved ones.

My hope is to either go back to Gengar, or IDK, possibly a “happier” Pokémon (but I do love Gengar so I ain’t mad lol).

I definitely live for analogies lol! But I didn’t think Pokémon and PTSD would be one of them.

Nightmares That Haunt Me

In 2014 my husband (The Tenor) got a new job that has moved us around the United States. It’s been awesome, and scary, and an adventure, and destabilizing, and (now that I’m on AMAZING antidepressants) overall a great experience, that I’m now able to be grateful for. Except our current residency’s winters…no one should live in this kind of winter hell scape, but that aside: its good.

One of the best parts of this is being able to go to therapy, and addressing a lot of, well shit in my life. In fact 2014 was the last year I worked for my nightmare. She still haunts my dreams—she is my literal nightmare.

I have danced around the idea for the last four years, refusing to acknowledge some of this. The first two years of nightmares seemed natural (and honestly: they probably weren’t). It wasn’t until 2015 and Adele’s “Hello” that I started pinpointing my trauma (I still hate using this word, but that’s what it is) and realizing there was not just depression that was wrong with me.

Why “Hello,” you may ask?

Because “Someone Like You” You see, at my job i couldn’t escape this song in the last year. There were four of us, each with our own radios/music playing. I played punk/ska/metal, but the older ladies played the contemporary soft rock stations of which there were 5, but, they each had a different station tuned in. So i heard that song EVERY TWENTY MINUTES ON THE TWENTY!

My therapist has even said in jest we are definitely going to work on this if only to get me not to hate Adele (which I wouldn’t mind—and YES, I did appreciate the joke because it was in my vein of humor).

So that small tidbit being said, I have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

The fact that I’m sitting and writing right now, with no guilt is honestly a big step.I hope I write more. I truly miss it. I’ll write more about this (I hope), and should anyone (if anyone is reading this) has questions hit me up, I’m always happy to help, especially about therapy and mental health stuff, where and how i can.

5 Underrated Disney Movies I Love (5 Fandom Friday)

FanDomFriday.twitter.png

Today’s post are my five favorite underrated Disney movies. While two of these are two of my most favorite I tried to really stick to the theme of “underrate” (IE not likely a “vaulted” treasure one). Let’s get down to business…well, you know the rest.

Wreck-It Ralph

Wreckitralphposter.jpg

I saw this movie in theaters four—thats' right, FOUR—times! I LOVE Wreck-It Ralph it is one of my favorite Disney movies. I made my siblings and friends and husband (then boyfriend) see it in the subsequent viewings. I enjoyed it so much on the big screen. As an “old gamer” it spoke to me I think (I won’t claim it did for all, but it did for me). I loved the Sugar Rush game and that Zangief and M. Bison of Street Fighter were in a self help group with Ralph. I really do love this movie.

Newsies

Newsies-Poster.jpg

While I haven’t been able to get into the stage musical version I will NEVER deny my love of the original movie! Christian Bale is a forever crush because of this, and Seize the Day is my favorite song from this classic! My friend Ashley got me re-hooked onto the movie back in 2001 when it was re-released on DVD. It really is a great musical! And the dancing and 90’s heart-throbs will make you giggle as it is chock full of them.

The Emperor’s New Groove

Grooveposter.jpg

Do I need to explain the brilliance of this comedy?!?! Eartha Kitt! David Spade! It’s a great ensemble! It’s so dang quotable and makes me “LOL,”—“IRL!” If you haven’t seen this gem: STOP watching whatever you’re watching and check it out!

The Parent Trap (1961)

Parent_trap_(1961).jpg

Specifically the Hayley Mills one! I love this classic! I do love the Lindsey Lohan one as well (she was brilliant in that one too). But the Hayley Mills one was always a treat to see on “free preview week" on the then premium Disney channel. I always found then (in the early 90’s) that the special effects and Mills’ acting held up the movie really well. If you haven’t seen this version make sure to do so!

Meet the Deedles

MeetTheDeedles.jpg

I saw this movie because of two reasons: 1). Paul Walker who was a certified hottie, 2). the soundtrack was AMAZING! Ska and swing wins and definitely a time capsule of 1998 (which is when the movie came out). Also I loved national parks, and surfing and this movie combined those with the ever-so-dreamy Paul Walker (in case, you know, I hadn’t mentioned that yet lol). The movie is probably one of the worst ever made but I still enjoy the heck out of it. It’s so cheesy! I love it! It also paved the way for what would be my #6 movie: Johnny Tsunami…but maybe I’ll have to make “TV Movie’s I Love” list sometime.

What are your favorite underrated Disney movies?

Scarlet Witch - Magical Hike (Workout Cosplay)

ScarletWitch.Hiking.png

I like to think of this as “Scarlet-Witch-Goes-on-a-magical-hike” where she communes with nature and practices her hex magic! Also: HOW AWESOME ARE THOSE SHEER COMPRESSION TIGHTS by Adidas?!?!? I LOVE them! And I feel like that Hydro is perfect! And of course I LOVE my Junk headbands (I swear I’m not sponsored, I just love their product!).

Since I was a kid I’ve always thought Scarlet Witch was one of the most interesting and underrated characters. I first heard of her via an old trading card (I want to say by Fleer) and was intrigued by her abilities. She and her brother Pietro were alway somewhat cool to me. When they finally got into the MCU (I hope they Coulson Quicksilver now that the mutants are where they belong and no longer in Fox’s paws) I was ecstatic. I actually want to cosplay as Scarlet Witch eventually and hope to one day.

Here’s a lil playlist that evokes an magical adventure spirit!

I hope you enjoy the playlist for exercising!

Is there a character you’d like to see? Or song you want me to build a playlist around? Let me know in the comments!

Take My Money Tuesday

Today I’m featuring a few house items as I’ve been CLEANING like crazy at home. I’ve been really blessed to have my parents visit me for a whole month as of late, and I’ve actually had my money “taken” by a one of these items while they’ve been here!

Head’s up, there may be a few affiliate links.

This bed set for The Tenor’s and my bedroom!

This will be arriving this week! I was GREATLY inspired by this Slytherin room, and the fact that my duvet has been in great need of replacement for over a year **embarrassed**

5 Characters I'd Invite to Tea (5 Fandom Friday)

FanDomFriday.twitter.png

FANDOM FRIDAYS ARE BACK!!! I’m so excited that The Sartorial Geek is revamping this idea originally created by SuperSpaceChick, and my favorite running buddy, The Nerdy Girlie!

Anyway, on to my five guests!

Professor Charles Xavier (X-Men)

Professor-X-tea.jpg

While the only male guest I don’t think Professor X would mind. He’d be a great presence and I believe he would get along with each guest very well. He’d especially love Hermione’s innate abilities in magic as well as Ami’s alter-ego in Sailor Mercury. He and Ana could talk about nature vs nurture and the two of them would have talks about being a parent with Lady Violet!

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

HermoneTea.jpg

I KNOW Ami and Hermione would be good friends! But I know that she’d also be fascinated by Ana’s healing projectiles and want to know what “potions” are used in her gun and how it all works. I do feel that she and Lady Violet might be the two who wouldn’t get along…but tbh I feel like if anyone could make the Dowager Countess question her traditions and ideas it would be Hermione! Also I think Professor X would be greatly intrigued by her innate magical abilities!

Ana (Overwatch)

Art by JessDraws

Art by JessDraws

Ana is one of my favorite (#3 after Sombra and Kenyatta) heroes in Overwatch! I’m a healer main and she and Zenyatta are my go-to healers! I know she loves a good cuppa and I feel like she and lady Violet would shoot-the-$h!t together and trade wonderful stories that I would just LOVE to hear! Also: can’t you just see Ami and Hermione quizzing her on how her guns heal?!?!

Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon)

IMG_9370.PNG

Ami/Sailor Mercury is my favorite Inner Senshi Scout! And I think she and Hermione would have such wonderful talks both together and with all the guests. Ami and Hermione would relate about school. Ami would probably be a favorite of Lady Violet. And Professor X would know about her alter ego, and she could confide her fears for the universe with him.

Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham (Downtown Abbey)

Violet Crawley.jpg

While Lady Violet is probably the more outsider here, I believe she and Ana would have impeccable manners that my guests and I would love to learn. She’s also an experienced hostess and while often seen as curt, I think I’d learn well from that. Also, what good is serving tea, without TEA and shade?

Who would you invite to tea, and why?

Black Widow Workout Cosplay

While the movie comes out in May, I’ve been eager to create this outfit and playlist for a few years…and well…I’m impatient AF apparently and couldn’t wait for the movie though LOL!

Here’s a winter run inspired set!

BlackWidow.WorkoutCosplay.1.png

The enamel pin is from this listing on Easy! My idea was to put it on the fanny pack/waist pouch to serve as something like her belt…a utility belt if you will ;) lol!

As for the playlist, I made a fairly up tempo high BPM list for your workouts! I hope you enjoy it!

It features a goodie classic from The Donnas as well as Bad Cop, Bad Cop whom I’ve recently become more “obsessed” with!

Let me know in the comments of any requests for characters you have!

Take My Money Tuesday

TakeMyMoney.Tuesday.png

Here’s some cute items I found on the internet that I also REALLY want (BUY ALL THE THINGS)!

It’s still cold where I am and as a hoarder of sweatshirts, I definitely want this Burton DryRide Sweatshirt that has an extra zippered kangaroo pocket. Oak Long Pullover Hoodie by Burton

This Look Human mug featuring some Animal Crossing love! Nook’s Homes Design Expert 15 oz mug by Look Human

Nook's Homes Design Expert Mug

Surf Like a Girl (Barnes and Noble, or Amazon) is a book that feature women telling their surfing stories in their own words. Including not just surfers, but board shapers, photographers and other women involved in the sport! I grew up with a wall dedicated to surfing and my favorites were women like Lisa Anderson and Megan Abubo! Even if you’re not a surfer, (or not a particularly good one—I’m not, but I loved it) it seems like it’d be a great coffee table book!

Surf Like a Girl

While looking for accessories to my Black Widow Workout Cosplay, I stumbled upon this AWESOME Waist pouch on Etsy made by SmashCraftShop!

Spiderweb Waist Bag Spider Fanny Pack Halloween Bag Spider image 0

And Finally, Stami Studios’ has these adorable villager pins (you can purchase them here)! They included two of my (many) favorites Fauna and Diana!

What is one of (or some of) your favorite finds on the internet?

Junk Brand Headband: Trial and Tested

I am in LOVE y’all!

DOUGHMOTIONS_BBL-S1_590x.jpg

Recently I was at my local sporting goods store and decided to splurge on myself a tiny bit. I was a bit skeptical as I have the oddest luck with headbands and tbh, paying $16 for a sports headband. But I found out it’s WORTH it! This review is of my own accord, and I bought this headband with my own money. It is sponsored by no one, and I just wanted to put some information out there on a product I am enjoying!

Slippage (or a lack there of)
This headband STAYS PUT! It doesn’t slip around. doesn’t pop off the top of my head near my ponytail. It actually stay in place. It also doesn’t twirl around on the top of your head.

Fit
Normally a downside to no slipping is a tight, headache-inducing fit. Not so with this head band! It’s just perfect, I often have headaches and migraines. I’ve made sure to try on the headband when I had a headache as well. It didn't make my head hurt more, and it has NEVER given me one. Which is quite a feat for me.

Texture
This headband is so soft, and comfy! I honestly love it!

But did it keep my hair and sweat off my face?!
Short answer: YES! While I clearly don’t wear on my whole forehead, I did try it out, and it absorbed sweat without feeling soggy/sopped. More importantly for me, it kept the hair-based sweat from trickling down my face and back of my neck. YET, it is still breathable enough to where I felt cool enough while running and lifting weights.
It also didn’t soak up any dye from my hair color (rainbow prism in the semi-selfie) which has just as much to do with fabric as dye (I dye my hair enough to know both can be a cause).

OVERALL?: 5/5 Stars!!!

I can’t recommend this headband enough! In fact I’m planning on buying one of the ear warmer headbands soon, so I can do a winter run review, and even try it as a casual band in my cold city!

Captain Marvel Workout Cosplay

It’s been a while. It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and even longer since I’ve posted a Workout Cosplay.
Time to change both of those lol!

Who better to kick off the new year than Captain Marvel!

Captain Marvel WC.png

My playlist has some “dated” songs featuring female artists from the 90’s and before! Additionally, I had to include “Nicholas” Fury’s special request as the “hidden bonus track” lol! Try to think of it as a mixed CD! As well as a Missy x Aaliyah BFF jam that you know Carol and Marie would be dueting at karaoke!

I plan on featuring a few women of Marvel! I’m watching the entire MCU (TV included) in chronological order! It’s inspiring as always for when I workout, because I want to be superhero strong!

Who would you like to see featured?

Geek Out Day 17 Favorite Video Game Soundtrack

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

AC.GC.jpeg

Today’s prompt is the music I love from a Video Game. I also happen to love this game, and honestly, the music is one of the reasons why. Animal Crossing is one of my favorite franchises for a plethora of reasons; the music being one of the main ones. Different sets of hours have different tunes. The local musician, K.K. Slider plays in town on Saturday evenings; even taking requests and GIFTING you with a demo of that evening’s setlist. Some songs you can’t even hear in town with out K.K. playing them!

KKSlider.png

Additionally, animals play K.K. tunes (depending on which game of the franchise you’re playing and whether or not they have a radio/record player in their home.

Other citizens have their own musical themes from the old mayor, to Crazy Redd (a local shady af business fox). The music is so good I would suggest checking out the game for that reason alone!

What’s your favorite video game sound track?
Let me know in the comments!

Geek Out Day 16 My Dream Crossover

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

This is probably the easiest post to write! While I would love to see my favorite book series made into a television series as it would/could cover any manner of crossovers, the other crossover I would love to see is pretty much surmised in this improvised scene from Parks and Rec by Patton Oswalt. It’s actually a fantastic idea I think (though I do think Hawkeye MUST be there). Even the Brian and John bits!!! Like, I’d throw my money at this kickstarter! Also I can’t help but be happy the X-Men are in the Marvel studios where they belong, which is 2/3 of this dream lol!

Enjoy!

Patton Oswalt's proposal for Star Wars Episode VII while he filibusters in Season 5, unedited.

What crossover do you wish you could see come to life?

Geek Out Day 15 My Hogwarts House

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

Slytherin_ClearBG.png
Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends.
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.
— Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Capricious, ambitious, and perhaps a little competitive (OK, a lot) I knew from book one which house I belonged in. And believe or not: I didn’t want to at first. With racist ass-hats like Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, you can’t really blame me. While I’m glad Malfoy changed, I’m also happy Crabbe got what he deserved.

That aside I figured out how I could approach how I personally viewed Slytherin house.

And power-hungry Slytherin,
Loved those of great ambition.
— Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

What I ended up telling myself was Slytherin was like punk int he mid/early 90’s. It had a bad rep because white supremacists kept trying to take over (Deatheaters and their kids) and then you had punks who were so anti that. I’m on the latter end of Slytherin. I like to think I’d clock Draco in our common room, or that a lot of the house who didn’t agree hung out with Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws; and maybe a few Gryffindors who weren’t too…jock-ish about hanging out with their “rivals.”

To be perfectly frank, I think one of the weakest points of Harry Potter is a lack of Slytherins reveling against their perceived status quo. I don’t know any Slytherin friends who don’t have that in common amongst us. But yeah I get the whole “narrative” bit.

I like being a Slytherin. We have the best color scheme (silver and green), are a water “sign” we are ambitious but loyal af (we some ride-or-die peeps) and while we are ambitious, we’re not always cut-throat about it. Not always…I swear.

What’s your Hogwarts house, and why do you like being a part of it?

Geek Out Day 14 - Dream Super Power

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

kittypryde.jpg

While flight is also a dream, I’ll be honest: freezing up in the air doesn’t sound like as much fun. Also, the main thing I want is the ability to move and go places. Ideally for free.

Enter, Shadowcat’s powers. Walking through walls, phasing through everything and everyone! Including the internet (at one point or another in her abilities). I could go anywhere at anytime! It’d be a blast! And I could fight crime!

If I could get my own Lockheed out this too? Hell yeah!

I mean it’s that or sharable invisibility (where if I’m able to touch and concentrate, I can turn someone/something else invisible too!).

What super power do you wish you could have?

Geek Out Day 13 Favorite Book Series

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

EyreAffair.jpg

My favorite series of all time is by Jasper Fforde. It’s the Thursday Next series, about a woman named Thursday, who finds out she can read herself into fiction. The first book of her series The Eyre Affair details how the Jane Eyre we now know and love was changed in part by Thursday, and how “we almost lost the book for forever.

From there, Thursday joins Jurisfiction: the jurisdiction, that governs/polices fiction. This is my literal/literary dream job!!! Thursday joins characters such as Miss Havisham, the Cheshire Cat (or sometimes “The Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat”) who guards/keeps an eye on The Great Library where EVERY work of fiction, in any ISBN version, in any language, etc is stored!

Honestly, I could go on FOREVER about this series. I reread this so often, and on top of that, I listen to it often as well LOL! I truly love this series, and the spin-off (yes! There’s a legit spin-off) in the Nursery Crime series, which I actually read first! It features a homicidal, gargantuan Gingerbread man and Jack Sprat and his partner Mary Mary have to stop:

NurseryCrime.png

The other series by Fforde is The Chronicles of Kazaam which is a YA series set in the modern world, with old medieval mythology, and a young girl as a knight! The first book also got it’s own made for TV movie! Also, I LOVE dragons so that, plus my favorite author? I was sold!

He also recently came out with Early Riser, which I am saving to read on my upcoming trip! But what could be my favorite series still only has one book. Shades of Grey is the series and its about a cast system based on Thomas Munssell tests. It’s so good and it’s been like 10 YEARS since a new chapter, (much like one of my favorite manga). But I would still suggest it!

Shades.jpg

Geek Out Day 12 Favorite Video Games, & Series

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

My favorite video games include ones with cute, kawaii creatures; a badass woman; and shiny af shooters!

1). Animal Crossing

ACWA.jpg

Since the Game Cube, I’ve been OBSESSED with Animal Crossing. I refuse to give up my cube because i love it (and Mario Party 5 & 6) so dang much! I’m so excited for New Horizons (and finally being able to be brown) that I preordered it the day it was announced!!! I love Pocket Camp and Happy Home Designer as well! But New Leaf (/Welcome Amiibo) has been my favorite iteration so far! I even bought the gorram sanrio pack so I could get all that sweet sweet kawaii sanrio goodness! I am so eager for March it’s not even funny y’all!

2). Kirby

kirby.png

Kirby was my first video game love EVER! I played Dreamland back on the old NES and was so stoked when it was available to purchase as a digital download on the 3ds! While Magic Mirror is BY FAR my favorite (it’s such a dizzying maze of a game and as a completionist I’m still not at 100%…though it is on my Game Boy Advance SP and I need to bust it out). I love the release on the Nintendo Switch as well. Kirby is the sweetest lil’ Cream Puff (his species as announced in the early 90’s…not sure if true still) and he even is so special to me, he became my first video game tattoo!

Tattoo & photo by @pastelxtattooer

Tattoo & photo by @pastelxtattooer

3). Tomb Raider

tomb-raider-anniversray.jpg

Possible the most surprising on this list is my inclusion of Tomb Raider. While I always found men’s assertion of her physique and clearly male-gazey anatomy creepy, and tone deaf, I did enjoy seeing a bad-ass heroine who WOULD MOST DEFINITELY TAKE OUT NATHAN DRAKE AND INDIANA JONES (fight me!). I loved that her game was action and puzzle and had her in the craziest of places but still carrying on “on her own” (I mean I was the guide but still). I also really liked the movies (yes, even the admittedly terrible Angelina Jolie ones) as I got to see a woman being a bad ass as the STAR! And that’s something that I think Lara Croft, and Jolie deserve more credit and love on! I also refuse to give up my PS because I need to be able to play 1-3 in all their old school glory!

4). Overwatch

art by WandaKun

Overwatch was a game I knew I would love just from the artwork. It’s Blizzard made (which means despite the non-story based game play, still has a solid lore). The characters are divers not just in their abilities, but also, ethnicities, sexual preferences, motivations! My personal favorites are Sombra, Zenyatta, Torbjorn, and more recently Baptiste for my mains. I actually play as a sub for Aggromancy a team on the Women of Overwatch League (WOWL) #WeChooseFist cause sometimes, you just gotta punch to win lol!

5). Destiny

destiny.jpg

I didn’t start playing Destiny until The Taken King DLC had already come out, so I missed most of the early drama (#dinklebot, and unfinished game). But Bungie created an intriguing lore, fun gameplay, and great for getting this old broad back in to FPS (a genre I’ve had vertigo based issues with previously). Like Overwatch the shine of my guns and armor in the game (though not as “Blizzard” level) actually kept me from getting dizzy. It was honestly the game that got me back into console gaming. While Destiny 2 has had a lot of negatives, (like the killing off of my “boyfriend” Cayde-6, and generally bummer of a first season of DLC) Destiny will always be a personal favorite, especially the first incarnation. (also: Ikora Ray is a bad ass who deserves more frakking credit!

Geek Out Day 11: Favorite Manga and Comic Series

Thanks to Megan at A Geeky Gal and this list of prompts, I’m participating in her 30 Day GEEK OUT!

Let’s start with my two favorite comics (I realize manga is just comics in japanese, but I’m using these for distinction):

1). Bone by Jeff Smith

Bone vol 1.jpg

Bone is an underrated (well, actually “Not-as-well-known-as-it-should-be” would be more accurate) all ages comic series. I first heard about the series in the long defunct Disney Adventures Magazine. And honestly: it was the main reason I tried to collect all the issues (though the covers were also cool af and i’m 98% sure it would do well now-a-days). Smith tells an epic fantasy with a WARRIOR princess who truly is multi-dimensional. Also, there are dragons! Also, also there are Stupid stupid rat creatures (the creature in which an early meme tag/usage got the title from).

2). The Astonishing X-Men’s Age of Apocalypse series

Astonishing.AoA.jpg

This was my first or second comic book ever and I bought it at a class “auction” in school. It was my introduction to Clarice “Blink” Ferguson (my fave X-Man of all) and why I don’t completely hate Sabertooth anymore. Also: hot af Iceman ;) lol. I love re-reading them. And I try to buy ANY blink stuff (except when she had the mullet). Also: Morph in this series made me laugh aloud like a loon.

As for number 3, it is my most favorite manga (even more than Sailor Moon):

3). Nana

Nanasite.png

Nana is my most favorite manga, and Yazawa Ai my favorite manga-ka. The reason I got into Nana was via Paradise Kiss (another of her manga titles that serves as a pseudo-sequal to Gokinjo Monogatari). But Nana? Nana resonated! Even thinking of this manga makes me feel like a whole new person. The story and its puns, and its art?!?! It’s so beautifully realized and clever! I adore it. Sadly, around 2007 Yazawa-san got very ill, and the completion of the story has been on hiatus ever since. I wish I could writer her and ask even for the most basic essay form for what happens, and how it ends. But alas, I’d still want all the beautiful minor details.
